Jackson County art grants Appalachian Women’s Museum.
The Jackson County Arts Council has awarded $50,250.06 in business interruption grants to local nonprofit arts organizations, other organizations with art programming, and individual artists through the North Carolina CARES for the Arts grant program.
In September, The North Carolina General Assembly designated $9.4 million federal CARES Act funds for arts councils and arts organizations to mitigate business disruptions caused by COVID-19.
The North Carolina Arts Council distributed these funds on a per-capita basis to all North Carolina counties with a population of less than one million people. In many counties, local arts councils received the funds and sub-granted a portion of the county allotment to eligible recipients.
National Trust Director General Hilary McGrady said: “We are at a crossroads. It is just nine months until world leaders meet in Glasgow at COP26 to tackle the climate crisis that is devastating our natural world, home and abroad.
“Nature is in decline, homes for wildlife are vanishing before our eyes and some of our most special and significant historical places are being exposed to extreme weather events like never before.
“We can mitigate the impacts of the climate crisis though. Planting more trees and woodland, making sure our uplands and lowlands can cope with extreme rainfall – these are things that will help prevent the devastating flooding experienced by large sections of the country this year.
NASA extends SCC partnership for 5 years Matt Cass, Physics and Astronomy Instructor at Southwestern Community College, serves as the principal investigator for the Smoky Mountain STEM Collaborative. SCC is the only community college in the nation to have a scientific activation partnership with NASA.
Two years before a total solar eclipse left area residents breathless in 2017, Southwestern Community College started working with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in an effort to bring advanced Science, Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) education opportunites to Western North Carolina.
That made SCC the nation’s only community college to have a scientific activation partnership with the renowned space agency, and the positive impact extends far beyond the college’s classrooms.
